In honor of l’Aventure Languedoc that runs all month, this week’s wine comes from the sunny Mediterranean coast of the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. Anyone who loves a cold white wine on a hot day has probably found the pleasures of Picpoul already. If you haven’t, then I urge you come in and give it a shot. Picpoul is the grape and the wine it provides is just a bit more than your average value summer sipper. More=body, flavor, depth, finish, character. Pinet is a small village on the coast, famous for its seafood, especially its oysters. Not surprisingly, Picpoul is incredible with fresh seafood and has just a wee bit of salinity to it that marries with the salinity of oysters like a champ. Refreshing flavors of melon, lemon and grapefruit marry with aromas of lime, smoke, honeysuckle and white flowers. Bright and smooth, medium-bodied, with a dense mouth feel, a nicely integrated acidity and a very clean, lengthy finish. We’ll be tasting it in the store Friday, June 6th from 4-7pm and Saturday, June 14th from 1-4pm. Oh, did I mention that it’s $9.99? It will be stacked in the wine department all summer long for your sipping (gulping) pleasure.
