2014 Montinore Borealis White, Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA $11.99 (Reg: $14.99): Borealis is a fitting name for this wine. Just as the Northern Lights are shape-shifting and containing multitudes of colors, this wine contains multitudes of flavors. Covering a wide flavor spectrum with white nectarine, pineapple and lime being the standouts for me. This is a very intriguing blend of Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Müller-Thurgau. Completely dry, mouth filling but with bright acidity. Organic & Biodynamic.
NV Garofoli Guelfo Verde Frizzante Bianco, Marche, Italy $7.99 (Reg: $9.99): Garofoli is a very old estate situated on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The pictures I’ve seen show the land meeting the water in big steep cliffs of white calcareous clay soil. It is here that this meager $8 wine is made giving it a mineral/saline thread. The wine is slightly bubbly with fresh tree fruit (green apple) aromatics and lively acidity. Really lovely and a great way to give a send off toast to summer.
2013 Armas de Guerra Mencia, Bierzo, Spain $9.59 (Reg: $11.99) Mencia, how I love thee. Dark and rich with big black fruits bursting from the glass like blackberry, black cherry. Smokiness at the front, a violet lift and chocolate in the middle. Medium acidity brings balance and won’t let you put the glass down. There is no oak here, just pure ripe fruit. Coming from the oldest winery in Bierzo where vines are notoriously ancient (50+ years here). Quality? check. Delicious? check. Well made? check. Organic.
